The Winters Theatre Company will present William Shakespeare’s delightful comedy, “As You Like It,” as this year’s choice for the annual Shakespeare in the Park presentation. The play will be staged in the outdoor amphitheater behind the Winters Community Center for two weekends, August 9, 10 and August 16 and 17 at 8:00 pm. With Putah Creek’s tall trees as a natural background, the setting is perfect for the Forest of Arden, where most of the play’s scenes are located.
“As You Like It” is usually classified as a comedy because of its happy ending and the antics of some of the amusing characters, but it is technically a pastoral romance because of its rural setting and rustic roles. However, not all the plot situations involve forest philosophers and lovelorn shepherds. Many of the leading characters are political exiles from a corrupt ducal court who have been forced to flee for their lives and seek a safe haven in the Arden Forest. Therefore, one of the several themes of the play is the contrast between the simple rural life of the shepherds and the artificial, self-seeking life of the courtiers.
This romantic comedy also contains several of Shakespeare’s typical plot situations. These include love at first sight, a young woman disguised as a boy, mistaken identity, sparkling heroines, and envious villains. The play’s happy ending features four marriages which occur after the couples eventually solve their myriad problems and look forward to the future together.
